MAGAZINE Collectors’ Guide to
James Bond UK PAN Paperbacks
WRITTEN &
COMPILED BY KEVIN HARPER |
|
The covers presented
on this page are displayed in the order they were first published in
paperback in the
UK, not in the original release order of Ian Fleming's novels in hardcover. As such
this provides a more interesting historical context to the publishing
history of the James Bond paperbacks in the UK. The dates shown below each
title denote the first printing with this cover. It is possible to find
some copies of PAN paperbacks which were bound using earlier sets of pages
with covers not usually associated with that printing. These copies were
generally bound to use up surplus stock of existing pages rather than
destroy them, or used on export editions of the novels. This explains why
some editions are listed with the same printing but a different cover.

*Export Edition
The first three printings of ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE were for
export only, and it was not until the 4th printing released on May 7,
1965 that the novel was widely available in the UK. Collectors should
note that the first three printings had the title in blue, whereas
from the 4th printing it was green. The rear of the export
editions featured Cecil Beaton's photograph of Ian Fleming which was
replaced by the Horst Tappe portrait on the UK versions. With the
exception of the Canadian edition which states 60c on the cover,
export copies were un-priced.
**The Home market edition of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
(2nd printing) was not published until May
6, 1966.
The Raymond Hawkey cover was also issued with a wraparound film tie-in
dust jacket to sell off remaining stocks before the true film tie-in
was released.
***The Home market edition of THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN (2nd
printing) was not published until May 1967. The first edition had been
exported to Commonwealth countries in July 1966. The covers in this
instance are identical with prices affixed locally on the rear via an
adhesive label. From May 1967 the paperback was available in Great
Britain with prices now printed on the rear and listed those for the
United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Although this series represented the
first time all of Ian Fleming's James Bond novels and short stories
had been published with uniform covers, the titles were actually
issued out of order from 1963 - 1967. The film tie-in editions of DR.
NO and FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE were in circulation before the Raymond Hawkey cover art was published. |

In addition to
publishing Ian Fleming's James Bond novels in paperback, PAN Books
also issued editions of the author's other non-fiction works.
The Diamond Smugglers (1957) featured two different painted
covers by David Tayler (1921-1985), and paperback editions
of Thrilling Cities (1963) in two volumes published 1964 and 1965.
The James Bond
Dossier by Kingsley Amis followed in 1966, along with The
Book of Bond (Or Every Man His Own 007) by Lt.-Col.
William (‘Bill’) Tanner [also Kingsley Amis] which had a cover
designed by Raymond Hawkey. John Pearson's The Life of Ian
Fleming was published in paperback by PAN in 1967 and retained
its Jan Pienkowski designed cover, which originally appeared on
the 1966 Jonathan Cape hardback.
The first James
Bond novel to be published following Ian Fleming's death in 1964
was COLONEL SUN by Robert Markham [Kingsley Amis once again],
which appeared in paperback in 1970. Roger Moore's account of
filming Live And Let Die (ghost-written by EON Productions
publicist Derek Coyte) was published in 1973 alongside a
film tie-in edition of Ian Fleming's 1954 novel. John
Pearson's fictional James Bond The Authorized Biography was the
last James Bond related paperback from PAN Books in 1975.
