The paperbacks
shown on this page are displayed in the order that Ian Fleming's
James Bond novels were first published in the USA, and illustrates the
different covers for each title from 1955 to date. The dates shown below
each title denote the first printing with this cover. Note that the 1960s Signet Books series (with solid
colour covers and a small vignette painted by Barye Phillips) were all
later re-priced and re-issued with a new serial number, and featuring a ‘007’ logo and
page-turning motif in the top left-hand corner. These editions are not
illustrated as the artwork is essentially identical to the original issue
unless otherwise noted.
Also note that the 2002-2008 Penguin Books, 2012 Thomas & Mercer series,
and the most recent 2023-24 William Morrow editions were issued
as ‘Trade Paperbacks’ meaning their dimensions are slightly larger
(usually 5.5 X 8.5 inches) than earlier mass market paperbacks, but
for illustrative layout purposes will appear smaller when seen next to
these editions. The 2008 Penguin paperbacks in the ‘Bond Re-jacketed’ series (with covers designed
by Roseanne Serra & Richie Fahey) were issued with
an overprinted white medallion logo commemorating the Ian Fleming
centenary. Only CASINO ROYALE is illustrated below as the covers are
identical in all other respects to the original editions. |

*The title OCTOPUSSY
AND THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS was originally used on the 1966 UK hardback
edition of the anthology published by Jonathan Cape. The US hardback
published by The New American Library used the shorter title, although
it still contained Ian Fleming's 1961 short story THE LIVING
DAYLIGHTS. All subsequent UK and US paperback editions also included
THE PROPERTY OF A LADY, a 1963 short story written for the auction
house Sotheby's.
007 IN NEW YORK is a
short piece written by Ian Fleming in 1959, and originally published
as ‘Agent 007 in New York’ in the New York Herald Tribune in
October 1963. 007 IN NEW YORK then appeared in American editions of
THRILLING CITIES; a 1964 anthology of Ian Fleming's travel essays
originally written for the UK Sunday Times, and
published throughout 1960. The story was not published in the UK until
1999 when it appeared in The Sunday Times Magazine Supplement
on 7th November 1999. 007 IN NEW YORK was then included in the 2002 UK
Penguin Books paperback of OCTOPUSSY AND THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, and in
the 2004 ‘Bond Re-jacketed’ paperback series published in the USA by
Penguin Books, with striking cover design by Roseanne Serra and Richie
Fahey.
